Octameric shawl is an exploration of brioche lace. The shawl starts with single colour brioche and then progressively introduces the brioche lace and then additional colours. To finish, brioche lace gives way to plain brioche and then to (non-brioche) lace. Four skeins of fingering weight yarn make this semi-circuular shawl a generous size that can comfortably be wrapped around your shoulders.
Video tutorials are available to demonstrate the brioche lace technique.
The name ‘octameric’ refers to the eight-fold symmetry of the shawl. The rippled edge of the shawl is reminiscent of sea creatures which is fitting since most creatures with an eight-fold symmetry live in the sea.
Materials:
• Fingering weight yarn in four colours, approximately 365m (400yds) of each.
• 3.5mm/US 4 circular needle with an 80cm/32” or longer cable.
• 5mm/US 8 needle (of any type).
• Locking stitch marker or cable needle.
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends.
Size of finished shawl:
Wingspan 230cm/92″, depth 96cm/38.5”, relaxed after blocking.
Gauge:
Obtaining gauge is not essential, as long as you are happy with the fabric you are getting. Different gauge will affect the size of the finished object and the amount of yarn used. Sample gauge is 18 stitches and 21 rows in pattern in a 10cm x 10cm/ 4” x 4” square, relaxed after blocking.
The pattern has both written instructions and charts.
