Welcome to this free learn to brioche course!
Some housekeeping matters:
- We will go through the pattern row by row. In the text below each video you will find the written instructions for that row, along with step-by-step instructions for the increases and decreases. The written instructions and charts are also in a file which may be downloaded in lesson 3.
- The videos all have captions. These may be turned on in the video settings, found in the bottom right of the video window.

- If you are a Ravelry user there is a pattern page for this course, where you can see what others have made of the course, as well as keeping your own notes.
Materials and tools:
The materials and tools required for this course are:
- Two colours of yarn. You will need about 15m/16yds of each. Choose colours that are distinct from each other. DK weight is ideal, although other weights are also fine. In the videos I am using bulky weight yarn.
- Circular or double pointed needles in a size to suit your yarn weight. 4mm/US6 needles will work for DK or fingering weight yarns, if you are using heavier weight yarn you will need larger needles. Since we are making a small swatch, choose a circular needle with a short cable if possible. Straight needles will not be suitable for two colour brioche. In the videos I am using 6.5mm/US10.5 needles to suit my bulky weight yarn.
- A tool to hold a single stitch. This may be a split ring stitch marker, a light bulb pin or a u-shaped cable needle. Failing that, a paper clip, safety pin, or hook earring will also suffice.
- A crochet hook in a similar size to your needles (optional). This will be used for the cast on, but if you don’t like the cast on method or don’t have a crochet hook you may use an alternative cast on method. In the video I use a 5.5mm/US9 crochet hook.
- A tapestry needle to weave in ends.
These three swatches were knitted, from left to right, in bulky weight yarn with 6.5mm/US10.5 needles, DK weight yarn with 4mm/US6 needles and fingering weight yarn, also with 4mm/US6 needles.
The pattern:
The video gives a description of the swatch that we are going to knit.
A pdf file of the instructions may be downloaded via the link below. This file contains written instructions as well as charts and a list of abbreviations and detailed descriptions of the various stitches.
Written instructions for each row will accompany the videos so you do not need to print out the file if you don’t want to, but it may be useful as a reference. If you prefer to use charts there is a discussion of brioche chart reading in a later section.
