One colour brioche

In this section we will learn how to do one colour brioche. First we cast on, then work a Set Up Row, then repeat Rows 1 and 2 as many times as we like, until the brioche stitches become more familiar.

Casting on:

Using your MC, cast on 19 stitches. Since brioche is quite stretchy, a flexible cast on is recommended.

In the video below I show you a crochet cast on method which I use quite frequently, however you may use any other stretchy cast on method if you prefer.

Abbreviations:

MC – main colour

Set up row:

Set up row WS: slwyib, (k, sl1yo) x 8, k, sl1wyif. Turn.

Abbreviations:

WS – wrong side

slwyib – slip with yarn in back

slwyif – slip with yarn in front

k – knit

sl1yo – slip one yarn over (yarn front, slip one purlwise, yarn over)

Row 1 RS:

Row 1 RS: k, (sl1yo, brk) x 8, sl1yo, k. Turn.

Abbreviations:

RS – right side

k – knit

sl1yo – slip one yarn over (yarn front, slip one purlwise, yarn over)

brk – brioche knit (knit the stitch and it’s yarn over together, as if they are one stitch)

Row 2 WS:

Row 2 WS: slwyif, (brk, sl1yo) x 8, brk, sl1wyif. Turn.

Abbreviations:

WS – wrong side

slwyif – slip with yarn in front

brk – brioche knit (knit the stitch and it’s yarn over together, as if they are one stitch)

sl1yo – slip one yarn over (yarn front, slip one purlwise, yarn over)

Repeat Rows 1 and 2:

Work Rows 1 and 2 as many times as you like, until the brioche stitches start to become familiar. Then work Row 3 (which is the same as Row 1), before moving on to the next section, where we will learn two colour brioche.
